A chat with Kevin Johnson

Categories: News

In safe hands. The JHJ Barker trophy resides with it’s current champion but who was JHJ Barker?

With the club’s 125th Centenary upon us TGC wanted to find out more about the origins of the Centenary itself as well as the JHJ Barker, Fred Hirst and Helen Gray majors. So we were put in the direction of Kevin “Ace” Johnson… “Ace?” you may ask. Well, you can find out how that came about in the audio clip below.

We initially recorded the conversation to make sure we got all the info down on our history finding quest but it turns out it was just a jolly good chat we’d like to share. Our recording skills need a polish, hence the long gap, a few beeps and an intro about foot injuries but soon after Kevin provides a fascinating insight into the origins of our majors, his exploits as almost every officer in the club and then gives up the gold and fills in his player profile. A massive thanks to Kevin for sharing these stories, his knowledge and insight into the game.

Pull up a pew, get a cuppa or your favourite tipple and have a listen to find out all things H.G.Stephenson, the secret of the Flat Iron trophy, a record breaking Helen Gray and how the winter league dinner hasn’t changed much…

Here’s the recording, we suggest you turn up the volume, maybe get the headphones out and hang on for about 49 seconds to let it get going!!
