| April 08 Rive Rocks Centenary winners Kathryn Anderton and Ray Newell Few Golf Clubs have two Centenary Competitions in their golfing calendar but Todmorden Golf Club is very proud to have achieved this remarkable feat. Todmorden Golf Club was formed back in 1894 and the links overlooking Centre Vale Park at Todmorden Edge were opened in May 1895. In 1907 Todmorden Golf Club moved from its former site to its present home at Cross Stones Rive Rocks. These new links bounded to one side by the infamous Calderdale Way and encompassing a Celtic burial ground were opened in 1907 but without anything of significance to mark the occasion. So, it was decided in 2007 to acknowledge the centenary anniversary of the move and the Rive Rocks Centenary Competition was born and played for annually. In the pleasant conditions on Thursday a good turn out of ladies ventured out for the second Ladies Rive Rocks Centenary Competition. Now readers might think that this reporter has taken to writing fiction as I’m delighted to report that the winner of the 2008 Rive Rocks Centenary Competition was defending champion Kathryn Anderton. Yes, embarrassingly but more to the point miraculously yours truly came in with a score of 33 points in the 18 hole stableford competition. Or perhaps it was due to my magnetic bangle purchased at last weeks pre season gathering drawing me to the silverware! In second place just one shot behind was last years Lady Captain Irena Brown with 32 points. Sharing third place with 30 points were Julia White and Lady Captain Linda Bell. Flying onto the birdie tree this week was Kathryn Anderton with a “Two” on the par 3 14th. The Gentlemens Rive Rocks Centenary competition took place on Saturday but in rather difficult wintry conditions. Eighty-six competitors battled against the cold northerly wind and hail showers with the hailstones even settling on the greens at times. However despite the adverse conditions past Silver Rabbit Trophy Winner Ray Newell came in with an excellent net 67 in the medal competition and becomes the 2008 Gentlemens Rive Rocks Centenary Champion. Just one shot behind in second place (net 68) was Terry Taylor who together with a couple of chums from over the border in Littleborough joined the club quite recently and are now known affectionately as the Littleborough mafia! Interestingly both players are both left-handers! The Two’s in the Rive Rocks Centenary Competition were attained by Colin Fowler, Leslie Greaves, David Greenwood, Richard Lupton and Darren Wilson. The official presentation will take place on Saturday at the opening of the season social evening. The entertainment will be provided by the 3 piece band Contact. Lady Captains Drive-In Winner Kathryn Anderton Perfect timing on the course at the Lady Captains Drive-In. Despite the overnight snow showers the ladies tee’d off in the cold and windy conditions on Sunday afternoon for the tenth Lady Captains Drive-In Competition. Somehow and we don’t know quite how but the ladies managed to pick a slightly surreal window - where the weather gods successfully put the snow on hold until the last few holes of the competition were being played. It was only then that the snow showers could be seen emerging as a mist from the Burnley valley and travelling towards the course at an ever increasing pace finally engulfing the ladies on their final holes. The winner of this years nine hole Stableford Lady Captains Drive-In Competition was Kathryn Anderton with 21 points. This reporter is now convinced her success was due to her magnetic bangle! In second place was Julia White with 18 points. After dodging of the snow showers the Ladies sat down and watched the snow fall in the comfort of the clubhouse whilst tucking into tea and scones. The winner of the nine hole winter series stableford competition was Irena Brown with 44 Points. This is in fact the fourth time Irena has won the event. The runner up was Dinah Kenworthy with 38 points. |
