TODMORDEN GOLF CLUB MEMBERS NEWSLETTER

So just what’s going on!!

Membership
Council aim to come up with some innovative ideas for increasing membership, but if you know anyone interested in joining the Club, please do not hesitate to provide them with an application form.
The Equality Bill is proposed to go through Parliament this year, which could also affect membership and categories available – watch this space.

Club Diaries
Club diaries will be available in the clubhouse for collection along with a membership bag sticker. A small donation would be appreciated to help cover the cost of their production.

Car Park Draw
We are running a Car Park Draw again so why not try your luck? Entries are £5 each and one lucky winner will have a reserved parking space for the year!
Simply select a lucky square from the chart at the Clubhouse, with the draw being made at the opening of the season.

New Swipe Card Offering Generous Discounts For Members.
As proposed from the floor at the 2008 AGM, the swipe card system was introduced on 1st October. Cards are available at the Club completely free of charge. Whilst not compulsory, there has been an encouraging uptake of cards, which provide members with a discount on purchases of food and drink over the bar.
Many thanks to all sections that made generous contribution towards the cost of purchasing and implementing the system.

Socials
The new Captain and Lady Captain are determined to provide a varied and successful calendar for everyone’s taste.
It is hoped that members from all sections will make the effort to support the Club with events throughout the year to ensure a successful and enjoyable year for all. Please see home page for the latest details.

Clubroom
The Clubroom is available for members, and non-members at very competitive rates for parties or celebrations. Similarly, it is available for meetings etc. If you know of anyone wishing to hire the room, please Contact the club Secretary, Ric Lupton Contact Ric for Details or any member of Council.

Bridge Club
A warm welcome is extended to Todmorden Bridge Club due to the unfortunate demise of their previous premises. They will have use of the Clubhouse each Monday, with morning sessions held for learners followed by some mean carding in the evening.
If you wish to come along and join in you will be made more than welcome.

Course
I think we can all appreciate the difficult time both Nigel and Chris have endured over the course of this year’s wretched 'summer'. Nigel has indicated that he has been as frustrated as anyone at being unable to get to grips with the course at times due to the inclement weather.

The greens, by his own admission, took some time to achieve the high standards Nigel himself expects, but even so the course was presented to the highest standards possible, resulting in many favourable comments by visitors from all over the country.

There has been a steady influx of trees on the course, which will continue as part of a rolling programme through the winter months. Some have been placed strategically, some with safety in mind. In the long term we are confident this programme will enhance the course still further.

'Oh….but the rough'! That was the desperate cry muttered from many a player’s lips last season. Council is pleased to report that there may be light at the end of the tunnel following approval at the AGM of a rolling programme of machinery replacement. This will start with the purchase of a rough cutter, which we are sure will please most!

The new bridge at the 9th was a welcome addition considering the sudden and urgent replacement that was required. It is envisaged, however, that this structure will only last 2 to 3 years, and a more permanent replacement will be needed in due course.

Finally, Council is delighted to advise members that Angus Woodhead has taken on the role of Ground officer. I am sure we all wish him the very best in his new position.

COMPETITIONS

Club Competitions
The new season will see a new men’s Competition Secretary in the shape of Paul Lukaszyk. He has many new ideas and new competitions in store so keep an eye out for these when fixture lists are produced.

One of shapely Paul’s first objectives is to review all 'Local Rules' and 'Competition Rules', and he will publish his thoughts and recommendations forthwith. Paul will publish the rules for each 'Club' competition alongside entry forms at the beginning of the season. This will hopefully iron out any disputes that may arise, as rules laid down at the start of the competition will be strictly adhered to without exception.

Summer League
The Rabbit section is proposing to run a Summer League on Sunday mornings, on a similar line to the successful Winter League currently in operation. More details will follow.
If last seasons Winter League Dinner is anything to go by we’d best get in training!

The Club would like to thank and acknowledge the efforts of Andrew Lupton for organising and running the Friday night summer league last season.

Leagues
Many thanks to all who represented the Club in League matches last season.

The scratch team missed out on promotion by the very narrowest of margins (1 point). This year will see the scratch team fixtures increased to 5 men per team, so the support of lower handicap players is needed more than ever this coming season.

Congratulations to the Rabbits on maintaining their Division 2 status, and for retaining the Charlestown Trophy.

Sadly, despite their efforts a blip in form saw the Seniors finish bottom of their League. Best of luck to a determined Senior’s Captain Peter Bailey for the coming season.

Finally, congratulations to our 2 lowest handicap players, Dave Stafford and Michael Murray, for their efforts in the Halifax Championships, an event entered by golfers from far and wide. Michael finished 2nd and Dave 3rd – a fantastic achievement and testament to their hard work throughout the season.

Handicaps

New regulations come into force this season that will affect the way handicaps are maintained going forward. Nil returns, for example, will no longer count as a card towards handicap. There are new rules regarding 'Active' and 'Inactive' handicaps. This is not something that is being brought in unilaterally by the Club. All Clubs will be affected by these changes. As such, Council courteously suggests that members keep themselves abreast of developments and changes by regular references to Club notices, which will appear on a regular basis.

Remember, an invalid handicap will affect your ability to play competitive golf, and your handicap is ultimately your own responsibility.

And finally... if you have anything you feel is of interest that you wish to have put on the website, please contact Jack via this Contact Webmaster link or the one on the Contacts page. I'm especially in need of digital photographs of each hole from the tee and the green for the course planner, preferably without players.
